But what about you? The Mama Lama Wisdom Collective is all about YOU and finding optimal health and happiness!
When we try to live that “do-it-all” lifestyle, many times, the one person who gets left behind is the most important person of all – and that’s you. I know this is true because I’ve lived it myself! It’s time to start thinking like a real Mama Lama. The wisdom is here for your discovery. Are you ready?

Note: Because we are Badasses, a Mama Lama can describe “herself” however “she” chooses. In the article, we are going to use the pronouns she/her/hers. Please choose your own pronouns. So, who is a Mama Lama anyway?
A Mama Lama is a wise, wonderful person who seeks wisdom and knowledge. She knows that joy resides in her heart and continually challenges herself to be the best person she can be for the good of all the lives she touches. After this, she cares for herself. Do you get where I’m going with this concept? Does putting yourself at the top of the to-do list sound like a far-flung, outrageous dream as you focus on your own optimal health and happiness? Can you even fathom the idea of making yourself a top priority?

The definition of a “Mama Lama” is multi-faceted. A Mama Lama is a person who lovingly takes care of others: children, family, pets, spouse, or partners. A Mama Lama tasks herself and accepts the responsibility of nurturing her own well-being – it’s an essential job that we often neglect. First and foremost, her needs are met. She is on solid ground!
For instance, you may meet a Mama Lama out in the street, helping make the community a better place to live. A Mama Lama holds social causes dear to her heart and works tirelessly to make things better for people who need help. She may simply be a stranger who offers you a knowing smile as you pass by with your arms full of packages or a fussy child squirming around.
A Mama Lama seeks to expand her horizons by learning new things, trying different foods, fashions, fitness ideas, or meeting interesting people. After all of her responsibilities complete, she even makes time to bring her friends together for fun and play. Conversely, she knows how and when to create space for herself when she needs a break and how to quiet her mind.
A Mama Lama is one of the most active, thoughtful, and beautiful creatures on this planet. Despite her many responsibilities, she manages to make time to exercise and explore ways to get her heart pumping and juices flowing in her quest for optimal health and happiness.
Who are we and why it’s important!
Mama Lamas come from all walks of life, all religions, philosophies, and creeds. Our bodies take on many shapes and sizes: tall to small, large in-charge to quiet and reserved types, and just about everything in between. We are strong in our belief systems, which are grounded in basic goodness. Our skin color reflects every magnificent, imaginable hue. Because of this, we celebrate our diversity and embrace our sisterhood.
We are our family’s CEO’s, CFO’s and COO’s all wrapped up into one. Therefore, our ranks include business people, doctors, lawyers, artists, and wisdom seekers. We are stay-at-home moms and do-it-yourselfers when the situation arises.
And yes, we are teachers who instruct everything from yoga to the next generation of thinkers and doers, down to the most straightforward lessons like how to tie your shoes. It’s that basic. We take our jobs very seriously because we hold humanity in the palms of our hands. That might sound dramatic, but it’s real, AND WE ALL KNOW IT!
The journey toward optimal health and happiness takes a little self-discovery.
My quest to discover the Mama Lama within started nearly 15 years ago as I began searching for optimal health and happiness. I was mired in the stress of everyday life, carrying an overload of responsibility. I have to admit, much of these responsibilities were self-inflicted. Ring any bells?
Growing up, I was an adventure-seeking, inquisitive child. At the same time, though, I was also very nervous and unsure of myself. I realize now how my feelings of unease drove me to seek control over every situation. Let’s just say I continue to be a “work in progress” and try very hard to seek balance and embrace change.
For me, the key to a happy life starts with healthy eating, exercise, mindfulness practice, and surrounding myself with family, friends, and joyful people. Granted, your journey will be a little different – not one of us is the same. A key ingredient we all need in our mix is a gratitude practice. For example, try to wake up every day and touch upon something positive in your life – it is so important.
Here are a few items on my gratitude list. See if you can jot down a few.
- My most important blessings are my three beautiful children, who encourage me every step of the way.
- Secondly, I am grateful for the presence of my large extended family. Possibly except Thanksgiving when the dirty dishes pile up to the ceiling and everyone is too full to move. Except, my Aunt Donna – bless her dish-doing soul.
- Finally, I am in awe and so grateful for my friends who have seen me through many ups and downs. They have been there making fun of me when I get yet another “brilliant idea” and laugh at me when our adventures hit a snag.
It is with this love and open-heartedness that I can share my world with you. I believe in living life to the fullest and enjoying all the universe has to offer.
Naming a positive personality trait helps set the tone for joyful living.
I am naturally optimistic and am capable of seeing the good in almost any situation. While life wasn’t always easy, this trait rooted itself into my being and has stayed with me into adulthood. That’s not to say I haven’t been pushed to the edge of grief, sorrow, and loss. Haven’t we all?
I’ve been gifted with a positive outlook and can focus on what’s good and kind in the world, most of the time. What word comes to your mind? What trait do you possess – no worries if you can’t come up with it just now. We’ll get there.
I am open to new experiences and will encourage you to be open to new information and ways of thinking. In this openness, we will learn tricks to shift our perspective towards optimal health, happiness, and joy through small adjustments in our point of view.
A joyful life is easy; you simply have to let go of the way you think things should be – and instead be open to every experience life has to offer – right here, right now, the good and the bad. It is my wish to guide you on this journey towards health and happiness and help you find your way, just as I’ve found mine.
Life isn’t always a bed of roses.
Like you and everyone else you’ll ever meet, I’ve had my share of struggles, which I’ll share with you in future articles as we delve into this idea of happiness and joy. I hope you’ll share yours too, so we can all grow together. In the words of Jack Kornfield, “Is there anyone out there who hasn’t suffered? Please raise your hand. Oh, no hands, I thought not.” He uses that line quite often in his talks and podcasts, and for some reason, it tickles me every time.
Of course, there were no hands in the air. Life is full of challenges. Sometimes it’s the cards we’re dealt, and sometimes we create our own turmoil and unknowingly spread it around. I’m here to tell you that there are ways to cut through the mud and come out on the other side as a Happy Mama Lama – Wise and Strong, in charge of your own happiness, joy, and destiny.
