When you hear the word “mindfulness,” what comes to mind? Maybe you immediately think of sitting out on your porch for about half an hour, eyes closed, listening to the birds chirp.
While spending time in nature is a mindful activity, invading thoughts about the day’s work can prevent you from truly “embracing the moment.”
Now that many families are homeschooling and working from home, parents are feeling burnt out. How many times have you misplaced an item around the house, wishing you’d just “paid more attention”?
Even with the most clutter-free home, we’re bound to feel overwhelmed and distracted, losing things every then and again. Fortunately, there’s a remedy to it, and it starts with being more present.
With tips from Angi, we’ll walk you through a few home organization hacks and how practicing mindfulness can help.
1. Assign Everything a Designated Area
Perfect, foolproof organization at your home is a stretch. Yes, being tidy and orderly comes in handy, but be careful not to overlook the most essential function of your home—a space that’s peaceful, cozy, and welcoming.
When it comes to organizing your home, mindfulness encourages you to be intentional about the function of a space.
For some, this means reserving the living room for relaxation and family bonding; for others, it may mean using the spare bedroom as your meditation and wellness space.
Carving out the time and space for self-care is just as important.
When every area of the home is assigned a purpose and function, a calmer atmosphere is inevitable.
2. Enforcing a Shoe-Free Zone
Not only do shoes track in dirt and other contaminants in your home, but also create physical barriers between your feet and the floor. When we walk around barefoot, we improve our body’s awareness: physical senses, balance, perception, muscle flexibility, and so much more.
Notice how much more slowly and carefully (or shall we say, mindfully!) you walk when you feel the coolness of a tile floor or the softness of carpet pile. If you’ve dropped or misplaced a small item, such as a ring, you’ll definitely feel it!
3. Use Decorative Signage
When you incorporate signage into home decor, they become daily reminders or “visual cues” of where to place items and how to utilize a space.
For example, a decorative key holder by the entrance that reads “Keys, Wallet, Phone” will naturally remind your household to leave those items there (items that are commonly misplaced). Maybe a DIY “yoga” sign on your back porch to motivate morning meditation and outside time.
With a little practice and patience, you can become just as in tune with being mindful as with any other daily task. From Saturday morning cleaning to cooking dinner, it’s all about being full present and aware.
